Change

He’s had this corner office for thirty years or more.
Today he’s packing boxes and emptying drawers.
Friends stand around and cheer; there are some jokes and tears.
Someone says, “Catch a fish for me.”

She’s got her neon ten-speed tied up to the trunk,
A brand new laundry basket and a back seat full of junk.
Her Dad tells her, “Use a map.” She says, “Dad, I’ve got an app.”
Her mom says, “Can this be my baby?”

Everybody hits a moment when they gotta cross a line.
To get to all the good that’s comin’, they’re leavin’ somethin’ good behind.
And we all change.

They’re both tired, her labor was long.
She hands him their child, he’s afraid he’ll hold him wrong.
He says, “Well, goodbye to sleep and being just your mom and me.”
But that ain’t why he’s crying.

Everybody hits a moment when they gotta cross a line.
To get to all the good that’s comin’ they’re leavin’ somethin’ good behind.
And we all change.
And no matter how amazing what’s on the other side might be,
There’s a little hesitation before we close our eyes and leap.
But we all change.

The sun comes up, the sun goes down
And the world spins round, and round, and round.
And the only thing that stays the same is change.

Everybody hits that moment when they gotta cross a line.
To get to all the good that’s comin’ they’re leavin’ somethin’ good behind.
And we all change.
Yes we all change.
And the only thing that ever stays the same is change.
